India's New Quality Norms: Boosting Small Businesses and "Make in India"
The release outlines new quality norms in India aimed at improving the quality of Indian products, supporting small businesses, and promoting the "Make in India" initiative. These quality norms are established through Quality Control Orders (QCOs). Under these norms, the manufacturing, storage, and sale of products that do not adhere to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification will be prohibited, as per the BIS Act of 2016.
Key points:
Quality Improvement: The primary objective of these quality norms is to enhance the quality of Indian products, ensuring they meet the required standards and specifications.
Support for Small Businesses: The implementation of these norms is expected to benefit small businesses by promoting compliance with quality standards.
Make in India: These norms are in line with the "Make in India" initiative, which encourages domestic manufacturing and the production of high-quality products.
Prohibition of Non-BIS Certified Products: Non-BIS certified products will not be allowed for manufacturing, storage, or sale. This means products must adhere to BIS certification requirements to be legally produced and marketed in India.
Legal Consequences for Violation: Violating the provisions of the BIS Act could result in penalties, including a penalty of Rs 2 lakh or imprisonment for up to two years for the first offense. For repeat offenses, penalties may range from a minimum of Rs 5 lakhs to up to 10 times the value of the goods or articles involved.
Exemption for Goods Manufactured for Export: It's important to note that these norms do not apply to goods manufactured domestically for the purpose of export. This means that products produced solely for export are exempt from these quality control regulations.
These quality norms and their enforcement are part of India's efforts to ensure high product quality, protect consumers, and encourage domestic manufacturing while promoting exports.
